DR. WESLEY SCOTT SENIOR LIVING DEVELOPMENT RECEIVES “HEART OF THE COMMUNITY” AWARD
Madison-based developer rewarded for its positive impact in Milwaukee
Milwaukee – Oct. 2, 2007
Gorman & Company, a Madison-based leader in real estate development, won the Wisconsin Commercial Real Estate Women (WCREW) award “Heart of the Community” for its Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community development. The award will be presented during the seventh annual WCREW Real Estate Development Showcase Awards ceremony on Oct. 18, 2007, at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. WCREW awards recognize the significant contributions of the development community to the real estate industry in Wisconsin.
The Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community is recognized for demonstrating successful collaboration among private, nonprofit and public entities and for having a positive, lasting impact in the heart of Metcalfe Park in Milwaukee. In the spirit of the late civil rights leader, Dr. Wesley L. Scott, Gorman & Company employed local contractors to transform the former home of the Milwaukee Urban League into an affordable, amenity-rich living community for aging adults. The residents participate in the continued revitalization of their community through collaborative programs with the Next Door Foundation, located across the street; and through programs in which older adults in the neighborhood mentor and positively influence the community’s youth.
“Metcalfe Park needs the support of the community to ensure its successful revitalization,” says Chris Laurent, Wisconsin market president for Gorman & Company. “The Dr. Wesley Scott Senior Living Community demonstrates this kind of support on many levels. Partnering with the Milwaukee Urban League and the City of Milwaukee created a development that not only promoted an inclusive social and cultural life within the building, but also helped to spur further development in the surrounding community.”
The Dr. Wesley L. Scott Senior Living Community, in Milwaukee’s Metcalfe Park Neighborhood, couples historic renovation with new construction to offer an amenity-rich community that provides 80 senior apartments, 74 of which target households below 60 percent of area median income. The partnership between Gorman & Company and the Milwaukee Urban League was central to converting this historic college and late home of the Milwaukee Urban League into senior apartment homes in a challenged neighborhood.
