Davenport, IL – Transformation of the old Moline High School building into loft apartments will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today. The development at 1001 16th St. is a 60-unit, mixed-income project. The Gorman & Co. project was designed with amenities such as a residents’ art gallery, including pottery wheels and photo dark room; a computer/ business center; a theater; exercise facility and community area.
The Illinois Housing Development Authority and the HYPERLINK "http://www.moline.il.us/" \t "_blank" City of Moline also participated in the project, which already is occupied. According to a news release, the state housing authority provided $800,000 in low- and interest-free loans and also allocated $498,710 in low-income housing tax credits. The tax credits generated approximately $4.5 million in equity for the development, according to the news release.
Moline High School opened in 1915. In the 1960s, the school was converted to Moline Community College, now Black Hawk College. The building later housed offices.
Several original structural details of the Gothic-style building were preserved, including the grand entrance, terrazzo floors, monumental stairways and period lighting fixtures.
